The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival is now accepting submissions from photo-based artists to participate in the 2019 Book Dummy Reviews.

This program is open to those who are developing a photobook, or for those with well-developed projects considering the book form for their work. This is an excellent opportunity for artists to have their work seen by over 15 local and international publishers, curators, and editors in a casual, one-to-one exchange. Artists will receive conceptual and practical insight about their projects, and gain invaluable feedback for applying to the Burtynsky Grant. This event is organized in conjunction with the CONTACT Photobook Fair on Sunday, May 5.

Please note that due to limited space, all submissions will go through a selection process. Submissions are free. There is a $75+HST participation fee for successful applicants.

  • 5–10 spreads that best communicate your project and vision for publication, + a max-500-word project statement (PDF)
  • CV and/or artist statement (PDF)

2019 Burtynsky Grant

Photographer Edward Burtynsky and CONTACT are requesting submissions for the 2019 Burtynsky Grant—a $5,000 annual grant to support a Canadian artist in the creation of a photobook.

This grant is intended for photo-based artists who are in the advanced stages of developing a cohesive, rigorous body of work presented in book form. The jury is looking for submissions from those that have created a book dummy and who have had little to no prior opportunity to self-publish or work with a publisher.

The winner and honourable mentions will be announced in June.

Please submit the following as a PDF by a file hosting service (eg. WeTransfer or Dropbox) to Hardcopy submissions are also welcome in person or by mail at the applicant’s expense; please deliver to our office (see website footer for address). You must be a Canadian citizen or resident to be eligible.

- Minimum ten (10) spreads of your book dummy that best communicate your project and vision for publication
- Project statement about your photobook and how you would use the grant funding (ie. rough budget details)
- Expressions of interest from publishers, and/or other publishing grants, if available
- CV and/or artist statement

The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival invites exhibition submissions annually between October and December. Please check back in mid-2019 for more information on how to submit to our juried and non-juried exhibition programs.

To qualify for submissions, all artists/organizers must have a confirmed exhibition venue in the Greater Toronto Area during May. A registration fee of $275 + HST applies to both programs.

Submissions are not accepted for CONTACT's curated programming, including the CONTACT Gallery, Primary Exhibitions, and Public Installations.
